It has been said that Jesus came proclaiming the kingdom of heaven but instead we got the church. This understanding of the gospels often assumes that Jesus came proclaiming a new age to arrive, but when that arrival was delayed, his followers created an institution that Jesus never envisaged. Yet from the beginning the apocalyptic character of Jesus’ proclamation has been apparent. The nearness of the kingdom requires that he gather a people to him who have the ability to live according to the new age established through his birth, life, death, and resurrection.
